The two creatures were almost upon him, tiny droplets of mucky yellow poison standing proud at the tips of their clacking mandibles, when suddenly there were two shots from the door and the creatures were flipped over onto their backs. Further gunfire shattered their bloated bodies and sent the surrounding shattered floor tiles spinning into the air.

Henderson turned to see the shocked face of a military corporal, his arm still outstretched, the hand which held his revolver still shaking. Behind him, Samantha breathed a sigh of relief.

“Lucky he was outside, isn’t it?” she said.

About the Author

John Llewellyn Probert is Welsh. Other things he and his creation Mr Henderson have in common are blue eyes, a wardrobe that includes a red velvet smoking jacket and several striped boating blazers, and a joie de vivre that refuses to be dampened in the face of adversity. Mr Probert lives near the sea where the climate is rather better for him than the damp Welsh mountain air that surrounds Mr Henderson’s ancestral home. He is the author of the books
The Faculty of Terror and The Catacombs of Fear from Gray Friar Press, and Coffin Nails, a collection of his short supernatural fiction from Ash-Tree Press, as well as numerous other published short stories, a full list of which can be found on his website. He spends his spare time consuming vast amounts of macabre literature and film, playing the piano and cathedral organ, travelling the world, and writing. His digressions during his university lectures into the more bizarre things he has encountered during his career have become the stuff of legend, as well as being the basis for several after dinner speeches for which he is in much demand. He continues to be amazed and delighted that the wonderful people he works with are still willing to put up with him.
